Key to Collecting: This is the second type within the Chain design. The majority of surviving 1793 Chain cents are of this type. Most specimens known today are well worn. Most are in lower grades from Fair through VG-8 and F-12, although VF coins come on the market with some frequency. Some exceedingly worn specimens are smooth save for traces of the chain device, which serves adequately to identify them as cents of this year and general type. Mint State coins are exceedingly rare.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Similar to the preceding type, the obverse portrait details are often weak, although less so than on the Chain AMERI. variety. On circulated examples, the reverse is typically a grade or two higher than the obverse.

Key to Collecting: The Wreath cent, named for the reverse, reflected a great change in the cent motif—now with a restyled portrait in high relief and with the reverse chain eliminated. Both obverse and reverse were given a beaded border, at once protective and attractive. At least seven pairs of dies were used to accomplish the coinage. Early examples have the vine-and-bars edge treatment, while later (scarcer) ones are lettered ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR. Today, Wreath cents are at once rare and popular, serving as foundation stones in American numismatics. Such coins are in continual demand, and there has never been a time in which the market for them has been slow. Circulated coins are rare in all grades. Typical grades are G to F, although VF and even EF pieces come on the market with regularity, especially when important collections are dispersed. Many pieces have problems, and cherrypicking is needed to find one that is just right. Mint State coins are extremely rare, but more available than the other types of this year.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually fairly well struck, although high-grade pieces may exhibit some weakness on the highest hair tresses and on the leaf details. On lower-grade pieces, these areas are worn, so the point is moot. Specimens are often grainy or porous, but choice examples can be found with searching.
