Key to Collecting: The Liberty Cap cent was created in the summer of 1793 by Joseph Wright, an accomplished artist, who also engraved some earlier dies for the Mint, including the 1792 eagle-on-globe pattern. The motif of the cent followed the obverse design of Augustin Dupré’s Libertas Americana medal produced in Paris in 1782 at the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin, except that on the cent the head faces to the right rather than to the left. This was the second use of the motif at the Mint, as in July half cents were made of the Liberty Cap design (with Liberty facing to the left, as on Dupré’s original). While Liberty Cap cents dated 1793 are major rarities, this was the standard design for 1794, 1795, and part of 1796, during which period well over a million were made, thus offering an affordable example for a type set. Those of 1794 and some of 1795 have the edge lettered ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR, while those made later in 1795 and in 1796 are on thinner planchets and have a plain edge. The type is sufficiently plentiful in just about any grade desired but most numerous in preservations from G to F or so. VF coins are offered frequently, and EF and AU pieces less often. Those dated 1795 are the most often seen. Mint State coins are very rare and are usually available only when specialized collections are sold. In Mint State, 1795 is the date most often encountered.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Vary depending upon the variety. Points to look for are hair details, leaf details, and sharpness of the border denticles.
Notes: The earlier varieties, those minted in 1794 and in early 1795, with lettered edge give the denomination three times: as ONE / CENT, 1/100 on the reverse, and as ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR on the edge. The same triple-denomination feature is found on several other early copper types.
