The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Designer: Henry Voigt. Weight: 13.48 grams. Composition: Copper. Diameter: Average 26 to 27 mm. Edge: Vine and bars design. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The first cents for circulation were struck at the Mint from February 27 through March 12, 1793. These were of the Chain motif and were made to the extent of 36,103 pieces. The first of these issues bore the abbreviated inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERI. (today designated as the Sheldon-1 variety). Perhaps 5,000 to 10,000 were of this style, judging from the ratio of surviving examples. The rest of the 36,103 pieces were of the AMERICA type. Chain AMERI. cents are rare in all grades. As noted in the introduction, many type-set collectors combine this and the next in an endeavor to obtain just one Chain cent. Most circulated issues are in lower grades. Specimens in Fair and AG grades can sometimes be identified, as the central chain device is usually visible even if the date is worn away. Mint State coins are essentially unobtainable, for only a few exist.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The details of Liberty’s hair are often indistinct or missing, including on many higher-grade specimens. For all grades, the reverse is often sharper than the obverse. Hence, if split grading were popular today (as it once was), a Chain AMERI. cent might be correctly graded as VG-8/F-12, or similarly.
