Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. 13 stars have adorn the periphery and the date appears at the bottom center. Arrows have been added to the left and right of the date.
Reverse Description
The words ONE DIME are centered and surrounded by an ornate wreath tied by ribbon and double bow at the bottom with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery.

Key to Collecting: Dimes of the years 1853 to 1855 With Arrows type are plentiful today in circulated grades, less so in Mint State. These are still easy enough to find, though mostly in grades MS-60 to MS-64. Gems are not rare, but are in the minority. Most Mint State coins are of the 1853 Philadelphia issue.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The quality of this type varies widely. Examples are often seen with one or more problems such as weak stars, weak head of Liberty, light definition on the higher leaf details, and mushy denticles. Many of the 1853 date were struck from over-used dies and have somewhat “shiny” grainy surfaces rather than deep frosty luster. In contrast, most later issues are better struck. Finding a sharp example will be a pleasant challenge.
Proof Coins: Such pieces are seldom encountered except when great collections come on the market. Most are of the 1854 date. Proofs were well struck, and choice examples have a pleasing appearance with deep mirror surfaces. Some prooflike 1853 coins have been called “Proofs”; beware of such.
