Obverse Description

Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. The date appears at the bottom center.

Reverse Description

The words ONE DIME are centered and surrounded by an ornate wreath tied by ribbon and double bow at the bottom with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears at bottom center under the bow.

Book Reference

Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 2.67 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 17.9 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans.

Key to Collecting: The Liberty Seated design without obverse stars was used in the half dime and dime series only at the Philadelphia Mint in 1837 and the New Orleans Mint in 1838 (1838-O). The 1837-dated coins are very attractive, and the starless obverse gives them a cameo-like appearance. The 1838-O dimes are often grainy and dull; few truly attractive specimens exist. Circulated coins are plentiful in the context of the era. All grades are available, with EF and AU examples being scarcer than lower grades. Probably nearly a thousand Mint State coins exist, although coins with eye appeal can be hard to find. Nearly all are dated 1837. Gems are rare, and gems with excellent surfaces are rarer still. Mint State 1838-O dimes are rarities and are often of unsatisfactory luster.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually seen well struck, although the denticles can sometimes be weak (but are generally sharper than on the related half dimes). Points to check include the denticles on obverse and reverse and the highest parts of the Liberty Seated figure and the leaves.

Proof Coins: Proofs of 1837 (but not 1838-O) were struck in an unknown small quantity, but seemingly more than the related 1837 half dime. Most have deep mirror surfaces and are quite attractive. Avoid deeply toned pieces.
