The half eagles dated 1829 (small date) through 1834 are smaller in diameter than the earlier pieces. They also have smaller letters, dates, and stars.
Obverse Description
Liberty with a bonnet, facing left, with 13 stars around the periphery and the date at the bottom.
Reverse Description
An eagle with wings fully spread with a ribbon above its head bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery with "5 D." at the bottom.

Key to Collecting: This half eagle type is also scarce, as there are really no dates that survive in quantity. Pieces can be rather “scruffy” in appearance, and more connoisseurship is needed to get a quality example of this type than of any of the styles discussed to this point. EF and AU pieces are usually heavily bagmarked. Mint State pieces need to be selected with care, and the finding of a choice or gem one will be an outstanding accomplishment. Get set for a long, difficult search. On the other hand, humdrum-quality MS-60 pieces with many bagmarks and with little eye appeal are easy enough to find. Some of these might better be called AU-50 or AU-58.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies. Check the high parts of the hair (especially the area immediately below LIBERTY) and the higher parts of the eagle, then the peripheral areas and the denticles. Sometimes the obverse is lightly struck at the center while reverse details are sharp. Luster is apt to vary from rather dull and insipid to, rarely, deeply frosty. This is a very diffcult type to locate in a combination of high grade, sharp strike, and superb eye appeal.
Proof Coins: Proofs were made of the various years and are extreme rarities today. Only about 10 to 12 are known.21
