Liberty with a bonnet, facing left, with 13 stars around the periphery and the date at the bottom.
Reverse Description
An eagle with wings fully spread with a ribbon above its head bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery with "5 D." at the bottom.

Key to Collecting: This type is impressive for its rarity, this being particularly true for the later-date issues. Happily, enough survive that the type is not in the “impossible” category. However, it will be one of the keys to your set. Circulated coins are in the minority and are usually of a high circulated grade. Mint State is the rule for half eagles of this type. The availability does vary. The rare 1815 usually shows signs of wear, while those of 1818 are nearly all Mint State.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking is usually fairly decent for this type. Check the hair details at the center, the star centers, and on the reverse, check the eagle. The quality of luster usually ranges from excellent to superb on Mint State pieces. Some are slightly prooflike. Planchet-adjustment marks are generally not a problem and are not often seen.
Proof Coins: Proofs were struck on a limited basis. At widely spaced intervals examples appear on the market. Possibly 10 to 12 authentic Proofs are known. Over the years, some prooflike Mint State pieces have been classified as Proofs.20
