The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Designer: Robert Scot. Weight: 17.50 grams. Composition: .9167 gold, .0833 silver and copper. Diameter: Approximately 33 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: Typical grades are EF and AU, with VF coins being in the minority, as such pieces did not circulate actively but tended to be stored in vaults and other cash repositories. Mint State examples come on the market with some regularity, but are usually at lower levels, say MS-60 to MS-63, with those dated 1795 often being somewhat prooflike, this sometimes also seen for 1796, but not often for 1797. Truly choice and gem examples are at once rare and desirable, and if combined with sharp strike and lack of planchet-adjustment marks can be incredible!
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Many pieces have Mint-caused planchetadjustment marks visible as parallel lines, often seen at the center of the coin (the high parts of Liberty’s hair and on the eagle’s breast) as well as at the borders. However, examples exist without this feature, and in securing a piece for type some patience is recommended. With regard to strike, the points to check are the high areas of Liberty, the star centers, the details of the eagle, and the denticles. While many such pieces can be viewed, only a few will ever be chosen by the connoisseur. Once again, certification services pay no attention to planchet-adjustment marks or striking sharpness, giving you an open field of opportunity! Very few $10 pieces will emerge with flying colors— sharp and without planchet-adjustment marks, so some compromise might be needed. Perfection can be aspired to, but may not be a reality.
Notes: There is no indication of denomination or value on these coins. They were valued by their gold content with recipients checking “Prices Current” listings in newspapers to establish their worth in relation to bank bills.
