The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Obverse Description
Liberty with cap, facing right, surrounded by 13 stars and the word LIBERTY around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagle's right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the periphery.
Book Reference
Designer: Robert Scot. Weight: 17.50 grams. Composition: .9167 gold, .0833 silver and copper. Diameter: Approximately 33 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: For type-set purposes, there are enough EF and AU coins around to meet most needs. Mint State specimens are scarce, and when found tend to be of the dates 1799 through 1803. True choice and gem pieces are exceedingly rare.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Planchet-adjustment marks continue to be a problem. Typically, these exist as parallel lines observable at the center of the portrait of Liberty as well as at the borders of the obverse and reverse. With regard to sharpness of strike, check the hair details of Liberty, the stars, and, on the reverse, check the details of the shield, the eagle’s wings, and the stars. The denticles can also be checked. Again, very few $10 pieces will emerge with flying colors—sharp and without planchetadjustment marks—so some compromise might be needed.
Proof Coins: In 1834 the Mint made up a new die pair with the 1804 obverse date, the “Proof restrike” as it is designated. These were included in sets created for diplomatic presentation. It is believed that just four Proof restrikes are known today.
Notes: There is no indication of the denomination on the reverse dies of this type. There is the possibility that one or more of the same dies may have been used to coin both half dollars (1801 to 1807 years) and eagles (1801 to 1804 years), but no such identification has ever been made by students of the series.
