Bust dimes represent the first iteration of the ten-cent coin, which debuted in 1796. The Draped Bust design is often credited to Gilbert Stuart and was struck from 1796 through 1807.
Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The so-called "small eagle" is portrayed standing atop rocks motif in the center with wings fully surrounded by an olive wreath that is tied by a ribbon into a bow at the bottom. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Designer: Probably Gilbert Stuart. Engraver: Robert Scot. Weight: 2.7 grams. Composition: .8924 silver, .1076 copper. Diameter: Approx. 19 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: Dimes were first minted in 1796, with no known fanfare or publicity at the time. Some are from prooflike dies, suggesting that they may have been “presentation pieces,” but no documentation exists. Likely, most were simply produced for routine commercial purposes. This type is the rarest and most expensive in the dime series. Within any desired grade, examples should be selected with great care, as many have problems of one sort or another. Most in the marketplace are in lower grades, from G to VG or F, and often with problems such as dull and porous surfaces. Choice VF, EF, and AU examples are rare. Mint State coins are rare, but when seen are usually dated 1796 and sometimes have prooflike surfaces. Some very choice examples exist and attract a lot of attention when offered. Specimens dated 1797 are exceedingly rare.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking is better on dimes of 1796 than those of 1797. Most dimes of this type have weakness or problems in one area or another. It will pay you to select carefully. Once again, not many of your competitors in the search will care much about sharpness, and certification services make no note of it at all, so you may be able to make a really good buy. Points to check for sharpness include the hair of Liberty, the centers of the stars, and, on the reverse, the eagle. Also check for adjustment marks. In summary, a sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality.
