Bust dimes represent the first iteration of the ten-cent coin, which debuted in 1796. The Draped Bust design is often credited to Gilbert Stuart and was struck from 1796 through 1807.
Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Key to Collecting: Nearly all dimes of this type were struck casually, with the result that most have some areas of lightness—a rusticity or naiveté that, of course, contributes to the charm of such pieces. Many examples beckon for inclusion in a type set, but you will be challenged if you want to acquire one with a combination of attractive surfaces and a decent strike—not needle sharp, but above average. Circulated coins of this type are scarce, but enough exist that finding one will not be a problem. The years 1805 and 1807 are the least expensive. Many are nicked, marked, porous, or have other problems. Mint State coins are fairly scarce and when seen are often dated 1805 or 1807. Examples of other dates are virtually non-existent in choice or gem Mint State and are first-class rarities even in MS-60, this being especially true of the 1801 to 1804 years. The combination of choice or gem Mint State with sharp strike is so rare as to be hardly if ever seen!
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Just about every coin in existence has one area of light striking or another. The obverse stars usually show some weakness. On many coins, the details of Liberty’s hair are not sharp. On the reverse, the upper right of the shield and the adjacent part of the eagle’s wing are often soft, and several or even most stars may be lightly defined (sharp stars show sharply peaked centers). Denticles are likely to be weak or missing in areas. Expect to compromise on the striking issue. In summary, a sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality.
