Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed, facing left, with cap on her head and the word LIBERTY on her crown. 7 and 6 stars on the left and right periphery, respectively with the date positioned in the bottom center.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. The denomination of 25 C. appears at the bottom.

Designer: William Kneass. Weight: 6.74 grams (changed to 6.68 grams, .900 fine, in 1837). Composition: .8924 silver, .1076 copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: Typical grades range from VF to AU in the circulated category, and in lower ranges of Mint State. Choice and gem pieces do exist, including quite a few of the first year of issue, 1831.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Quarter dollars of this type in higher grades are generally well struck, much more so than the preceding. However, it is desirable to check the portrait details and stars on the obverse, the eagle on the reverse, and the denticles on both sides.
Proof Coins: Proof coins were struck in limited numbers for presentation purposes and for distribution to numismatists. Insist on a coin with deeply and fully (not partially) mirror surfaces, well struck, and with good contrast. Avoid deeply toned pieces (deep toning often masks the true nature of a coin). Some pieces attributed as “Proofs” are not Proofs, in my opinion. True Proofs are often very attractive.
