Obverse Description
Liberty with a bonnet, facing left, with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
An eagle with wings fully spread with a ribbon above its head bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery with "2 1/2 D." written as a fraction appears at the bottom.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The striking is usually decent, quite unlike the earlier quarter eagle types. Points to check for sharpness include the hair details of Liberty and the details of the eagle. However, for this particular type, sharp striking is the rule, not the exception.
Proof Coins: Proof coins were made on a limited basis for presentation and for distribution to numismatists. All examples are exceedingly rare today and are usually encountered only when great collections are dispersed.
