Obverse Description
Portrait of Liberty facing left with a cap and the word LIBERTY on a ribbon above her brow. In a change from the lettered-edge coins, there are now 6 stars on the left periphery and 7 stars on the right side, representing the original 13 colonies. The date appears centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
An heraldic eagle holding olive branches and 3 arrows in its claws is surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. A ribbon below bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The denomination of 50 CENTS is centered below the eagle.

Key to Collecting: In 1836 relatively few half dollars of this type were made, a number believed to be below 5,000. Then, in 1837, the mintage was an impressive 3,629,820. For type-set purposes, an example of the latter date is the most feasible.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The striking of this type is usually quite good, but there are exceptions. Points to check include in particular the stars on the obverse and the details of the eagle on the reverse, after which you can check the hair details of Liberty, the lettering on the reverse, and the denticles. It has been my experience that pieces dated 1836, considered to be rarities, are usually quite well struck, but those dated 1837 can be rather casually made. Extensive cherrypicking will be needed.
Proof Coins: Proofs are occasionally encountered of the year 1836 and are quite rare. Authentic Proofs of 1837 exist but for all practical purposes are unobtainable.

Key to Collecting: As a class, half dollars of the type with obverse as above, but with restyled reverse, are scarcer in high grades than of the previous type, although the mintages of the new type were higher. Often there is no accounting for what seems to be logic! Specimens are available in just about any grade desired, VF upwards, and in circulated pieces, usually dated 1838, the largest mintage of this short-lived type. Choice and gem pieces are in the distinct minority. The ever-popular 1839-O with obverse mintmark is a possibility for a type set, but is more expensive than, say, a Philadelphia issue of 1838 or 1839. Select with care.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally the striking of this type is better than on that of the 1836 and 1837 Reeded Edge style, but still care is needed. Check the obverse hair details, stars, and denticles, and on the reverse, the eagle and denticles.
Proof Coins: A few exist, but for all practical purposes they are unobtainable. The 1838-O rarity is generally seen in Proof format.
