The 1897 has a low mintage in the series with 1,938 coins struck. Coins without any cameo are very easy to come by with a gradual increase in value for cameo pieces. Deep Cameos are rare but not too difficult to locate.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: From this year forward Liberty Head nickels are generally readily available in high circulated grades through MS-65 or even MS-66. While many show weakness or were made from dies that were worn, enough exist that nice examples can be found. The availability of Proofs trends downward, reaching a low spot in 1907, and remaining fairly low thereafter, except for 1909.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Many show areas of weakness and/or granular fields. Take the time to find a nice one. In all, 99 obverse dies were made.
Mintage and Distribution Notes: Treasury rules for the distribution of certain coins in effect in this era were as follows:
Five-cent nickel and one-cent bronze pieces will be furnished in the order of application from the United States Mint at Philadelphia, Pa. to points reached by the United States and connecting express companies, free of transportation charges, in sums of $20, or multiples thereof, except New York, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, and San Francisco, upon receipt and collection by the superintendent of that mint of a draft on New York or Philadelphia payable to his order.6 3029 (Deep Cameo)——1,5002,2503,000 9,000
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Portrait satiny, not deeply frosty. Usually well struck with Full Details, but sometimes with light striking on the corn ear to the left of the ribbon bow.
