The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The majority of the first year issue V Nickels were minted in very large quantities to fix the NO CENTS problem. This boasts the highest mintage for its entire series with 6,783 pieces struck. Common without cameo designations except for the finest of gems. Cameo coins are slightly scarcer with deep cameos being rare. Blast white coins and attractive toners are both accessible for this issue.
Obverse Description

Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: Despite its circulation-strike mintage of about triple the Without CENTS figure, the With CENTS is much scarcer in Mint State. Very few were saved at the time of issue, and there was little public interest in the correction of the design.
Examples today are fairly elusive in a combination of high grade, sharp details, and nice eye appeal. Proofs are readily collectible.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Striking varies, as might be expected from the large mintage quantity. Die cracks are often seen. Luster is usually lightly frosty. Most dies seem to have been retired due to cracking. As a result, strikings from tired dies are not often seen for this or other early dates.
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance:Proofs are usually well struck. Lint marks and planchet flakes are sometimes seen, and such coins should be avoided.
Mintage and Distribution Notes:Although conventional wisdom puts it at 6,783, my estimate is 2,783. It is likely that the popularly published figure of 6,783 is signifi- cantly exaggerated, as verified by market appearances and certification service data. For further explanation see commentary under Without CENTS Proofs.
