In 1855, Ferdinand Grüner cut the dies for a round-format fifty-dollar gold coin for Kellogg & Co., but coinage seems to have been limited to presentation pieces. Only 13 to 15 pieces are known to exist. A "commemorative restrike" was made in 2001 using transfer dies made from the original and gold recovered from the SS Central America. These pieces have the inscription S.S. CENTRAL A M E R I C A GOLD, C.H.S. on the reverse ribbon.

Book Reference
Thirteen 1855 Kellogg $50 coins are known today and are traditionally identified as Proofs due to their mirror finish and strike qualities. The dies used to strike these large coins were engraved by Frederick Gruner, and they appear to have immediately begun to crack with use. The finest known is a Very Choice Cameo Proof, and any original, Uncirculated example would qualify for the condition census.
