1854 G$20 Kellogg & Co., Short Arrows, K-1 SP

Kellogg & Company’s 1854 double eagles appear to have been struck using leftover dies from Curtis & Perry’s issue of 1853-dated Moffat $20 coins. Multiple positional varieties exist. All K-1 coins use the Short Arrows reverse die either matching or similar to that used to strike the Moffat & Company pieces. Somewhere between 180 and 220 examples exist for all 1854-dated varieties. The finest example is a Gem Uncirculated coin, and original, attractive Mint State examples would qualify for the condition census. Thirty examples were recovered from the SS Central America. A unique specimen striking K-1 exists that traces its provenance back to Augustus Humbert.
