Book Reference
Approximately 6,000 Oregon Exchange $5 coins were struck starting in March 1849. Due to widespread melting, less than 1% of these pieces survived. Of the 40 to 50 examples in private hands, most grade Very Fine or Extremely Fine. Truly original, problem-free examples are diffcult to find, and any attractive example with real luster qualifies for a spot in the condition census. Only two examples have been reported in Uncirculated condition, and an original.
