Washington Quarter 25c 1968-1998, Clad PR [Type]

Designer: John Flanagan. Weight: 5.67 grams. Composition: Outer layers of copper nickel (.750 copper, .250 nickel) bonded to inner core of pure copper. Diameter: 24.3 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.

Key to Collecting: Due to the rising price of silver, use of this metal was discontinued beginning in 1965, and circulating quarter dollars from that time onward have been made of a clad composition consisting of outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a center section of pure copper, in effect creating a sandwich. The new alloy proved to be very durable, and coins in circulation held up to wear better than did their earlier silver counterparts. This design and metal composition were used through and including 1998, after which year the portrait was severely altered. Circulated coins are extremely common, but not of relevance for type-set purposes due to the availability of Mint State pieces. Readily available in just about any grade desired.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually well struck and with attractive surfaces. Finding a choice piece will be easy.

Proof Coins: Easily available in proportion to the mintage of Proof sets. Those of the 1965 to 1972 era have slight relief and detail differences from the general circulation strikes. Examples with deeply frosted portraits and eagle are especially desired.
