Key to Collecting: The Washington quarter dollar, first minted in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Father of Our Country, enjoyed a long design life and was produced, with a metal change in 1965, through the year 1998. The design was by John Flanagan, a sculptor whose statuary was widely acclaimed. The Standing Liberty motif, not minted since 1930, was promptly forgotten! From that point onward, Washington quarters were made in large quantities, with the silver version being produced continuously through 1964, with the solitary exception of the 1933 year. Examples abound in every grade imaginable, but circulated coins are not relevant for type-set purposes as Mint State pieces and Proofs are so inexpensive that these form a worthwhile option. Coins such as this enable you to fill in some of your type set quickly. Proofs in silver have been struck at the San Francisco Mint from 1992 to 1998 and can be considered as belonging to this type.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The details of this design were not sharp to begin with. However, most examples are fairly well struck within this context. Little numismatic attention has been paid to the aspect of striking.
Proof Coins: Very plentiful and usually very attractive. Dates available are 1936 to 1942, 1950 to 1964, and 1992 to 1998 (San Francisco Mint).
