The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Designer: Robert Scot. Weight: 6.74 grams. Composition: Copper. Diameter: 23.5 mm. Edge: Lettered TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The type of 1794 with Large Liberty Head Facing Right, Liberty Cap behind head, is very distinctive. As to whether it should be considered as a basic type, as here, or simply as a sub-type to be included with the 1795 to 1797 issues is a matter of opinion, and you can make your own decision. In high grades, truly choice coins are rare—more so than the famous 1793. In this category, the 1794 Large Liberty Head is the Holy Grail of half cent types. However, you do have the market advantage that not everyone considers the 1794 to be a separate type, and, beyond that, relatively few non-specialists are aware of the rarity of pieces with good eye appeal.
Half cents of 1794 of high aesthetic quality are few and far between. Finding a choice one will be a great challenge, and it may be the case that if you are concerned about quality, you may have to examine a dozen or more before making a final selection. Because of this, do not be a slave to market values if a coin of exceptional eye appeal is found.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Half cents of this type usually have some areas of light striking. The planchet quality is usually poor, with porosity and darkness being the rule. There are exceptions, but not many.
Notes: Lettered edge varieties within this type give the denomination three times: as HALF / CENT, 1/200 on the reverse, and as TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR on the edge. The same triple-denomination feature is found on several other early copper types, including the earlier described 1793 half cent and certain of the next type.

Designer: Possibly Robert Scot, John Smith Gardner, or other. Weight: 5.44 grams. Composition: Copper. Diameter: 23.5 mm. Edge: Some of 1795, some of 1797: Lettered TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR; 1795, 1796, most of 1797: Plain; some of 1797: Either gripped or lettered. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The half cent type of 1795 to 1797 with Small Liberty Head Facing Right, Liberty Cap behind head, can be divided into subtypes, with either lettered edge or plain edge. However, most numismatists are content with a single example to illustrate the general style. Quality of specimens varies widely. The Mint State issues of 1795 are the most fertile field for quality, as most are on smooth light-brown planchets and are very attractive, virtual paradigms of numismatic excellence. Half cents of 1796 (with and without pole to cap) are major rarities and are thus beyond consideration for type-set purposes. Those dated 1797 are more readily available, although in smaller numbers than 1795, and usually with dark or rough surfaces (although there are some notable exceptions). Indeed, the half cents of 1797 are quite curious for their primitive appearance, quite unlike the beauty that is generally seen for the two earlier dates. In contrast to 1795, coins of trophy quality are hardly to be found.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Half cents of this type are often struck somewhat offcenter. Like as not, a given half cent of the 1795 to 1797 years will have indistinct definition of hair details and some lightness of a few leaf details in the wreath. The border denticles (toothlike projections) are often very prominent on certain varieties of 1795 and 1797. Half cents of 1797 are usually seen in low grades and often on unsatisfactory planchets.
