The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Key to Collecting: The 1793 half cent, the key issue of the six major half cent types, is the only year of the design with Liberty facing left, with a liberty cap on pole behind her head, this being the ancient pilaeus, or symbol of freedom. The motif was adapted from Augustin Dupré’s Libertas Americana medal created in Paris in 1782 by commission from Benjamin Franklin. Several months after these half cents were struck in 1793, the Liberty Cap design was employed on the large copper cent, but with Liberty facing right. Not only is the 1793 half cent one of a kind as a design type, but also it has the further cachet of being the first year of the denomination and a key date as well—it is elusive in all grades. Accordingly, the possession of an attractive 1793 half cent has been a badge of distinction for many accomplished numismatists. The typical specimen encountered is apt to show extensive wear, most being found in grades from AG-3 to F-12. At the VF and EF levels, enough pieces are in numismatic hands that they appear at auction with some frequency, but the demand is such that there is always strong competition. Mint State pieces are exceedingly rare. When found, they are usually very pleasing in appearance with lustrous brown surfaces. No more than a few dozen exist.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most specimens are of pleasing appearance, often light brown, and on fairly smooth planchets, indicating a good quality of copper used. Certain varieties are lightly defined at HALF CENT on the reverse, due to a combination of striking and shallow depth of letters in the die. This is apt to be most obvious on specimens in grades up to and including VG-8, for which these words may be absent. I recommend searching until you find one with clear lettering.
