The Type 2 Three Cent Silver was produced in order to have coinage between 1C and 5C, making it easier to exchange foreign coins (legal tender at the time) into U.S. currency. This type lasted from 1854 through 1858 and were produced with more silver (90%) than the first type yet, at the same time, the weight was cut down a bit.
Obverse Description
A six-pointed star with a harp in the center is surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom. For the type II issues (1854-58) there are two frame lines around the star.
Reverse Description
The roman numeral III is centered in the design ensconced in a large, bejeweled letter C surrounded by 13 stars on the periphery. An olive sprig is added above the roman numerals.

Key to Collecting: Variety 2 trimes are much scarcer than are those of Variety 1 and Variety 3. Most are very poorly struck, except for the scarce date 1855. Generally, 1854 trimes are poorly struck, and those dated from 1856 to 1858 are worse yet. Save for those dated 1855, probably no more than one trime in fifty in the Variety 2 series is sharply struck on all features. The beauty part is that when you do find a sharply struck coin, the added premium will probably be modest. It might be twice the price, but will be quite worthwhile.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually miserably struck with some or all of these characteristics: obverse lettering weak in places, frames around the star of inconsistent strength or missing in certain areas, and shield weak in places; reverse stars are irregular and poorly formed, olive branch and arrows are weak in areas; weak or irregular rims.
Proof Coins: Proofs exist of all Variety 2 dates, but the most often seen is 1858. When found, these are usually well struck.
