The Type 3 Three Cent Silver was produced in order to have coinage between 1C and 5C, making it easier to exchange foreign coins (legal tender at the time) into U.S. currency. This final type lasted from 1859 through 1873 and includes some of the great rarities and varieties across the entire series.
Obverse Description
A six-pointed star with a harp in the center is surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom. For the type III issues (1859-73) there is a single frame line around the star.
Reverse Description
The roman numeral III is centered in the design ensconced in a large, bejeweled letter C surrounded by 13 stars on the periphery. An olive sprig is added above the roman numerals.

Designer: James B. Longacre. Weight: 0.75 gram. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 14 mm. Edge: Plain. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: Circulated coins are most available for the years 1859 to 1862. Mint State coins on the market are nearly always from the early 1860’s. A readily encountered year such as 1862 is a nice possibility for a type set, but rarer dates may pique your interest as they often cost only a small amount more. Some examples of the readily available 1861 and 1862 years have an especially frosty luster.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies. Points to look for include full outlines around the star, full shield on the star, and full leaf details on the obverse.
Proof Coins: Today, several hundred or more exist of each, and all are readily collectible. Proofs have furnished the path to forming a high-grade date run, as Mint State examples of most issues after 1862 are generally unavailable. Striking quality varies, and careful examination is recommended. Some have the top of the D in UNITED broken.
