Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. 13 stars appear on the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom middle.
Reverse Description
The heraldic eagle is centered in the design with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOL. around the periphery. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in a ribbon above the eagle's head.
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht, with motto added by James B. Longacre or someone else on the Mint staff. Weight: 26.73 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper (net weight .77344 oz. pure silver). Diameter: 38.1 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Finding a circulated example for type will not be difficult, with 1871 perhaps being the most plentiful. In the Mint State category choice and gem pieces are more available than for the preceding type, but still are rare in proportion to the demand for them, but when found are apt to be dated 1871 or 1872. Usually these are relatively free of bagmarks (in stark contrast to the earlier type).
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The striking is usually quite good. Check the obverse features including the hair of Liberty. On the reverse, check the eagle, the motto, and other details.
Proof Coins: Proofs exist of all years and are available in relation to their mintage figures. Choice and gem coins can be found. Some, from old-time collections, have attractive iridescent toning and are especially desired. As always, careful inspection is recommended for any coin contemplated for purchase.
