The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 26.73 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper (net weight .77344 oz. pure silver). Diameter: 38.1 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Examples are readily found today in grades such as VF and EF and are typically dated in the 1840’s. Beginning extensively in 1850, such coins were hoarded and mainly exported, and later dates are rare. Finding an attractive circulated example for a type set will be no problem, and the same can be said for low Mint State ranges.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most Liberty Seated dollars of this type are well struck, but there are exceptions. Places to check on the obverse include the higher areas of Liberty and her hair details, the stars, and the border denticles. On the reverse, the eagle is a focal point, particularly at the lower left.
Proof Coins: Proofs were struck in the years indicated for all dates except 1851 and 1853. Later, the Mint accommodated collectors by restriking the Proof 1851 and 1853, as well as restriking a number of other dates, in the latter instance, adding to the supply of originals. Proofs remain rare today, but examples from the early 1860’s can be obtained fairly readily.
