The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”

Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 1860–1873: 2.49 grams; 1875–1891: 2.5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 17.9 mm. Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City.
Key to Collecting: Dimes of this type are very plentiful today, this being especially true of dates after 1874. Finding a choice example in any desired grade will be no problem. Mint State examples exist in large numbers in the marketplace, especially dates after 1874, and even more especially for certain high-mintage issues of the 1880’s.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually fairly well struck for the earlier years, somewhat erratic in the 1870’s, and better from the 1880’s to 1891. Many Civil War issues have parallel die striae, this being true of virtually all silver and gold issues of that period. Points to check include the head of Liberty on the obverse, the wreath details on the reverse, and the denticles. Generally, Mint State coins have excellent luster.
Proof Coins: Proofs exist in relation to their mintages. Certain examples of the 1870’s can be lightly struck in areas, a curious situation. Quality varies. Seek an example with deep mirror Proof surfaces and frosty devices. Avoid deeply toned coins.
