The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA adorns the periphery and the date appears at the bottom center. Arrows have been added to the left and right of the date.
Reverse Description
ONE DIME is centered in the middle of the reverse surrounded by a wreath tied by a bow at the bottom.
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht, as modified by James B. Longacre, with the arrows added during the chief engravership of William Barber. Weight: 2.5 grams. Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper. Diameter: 17.9 mm.
Edge: Reeded. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City.Key to Collecting: In 1873 the authorized weights of the silver dime, quarter, and half dollar were increased slightly to make them come out in more or less even figures in terms of the metric system. To signify this change, arrows were placed at the date of later 1873 dimes and all dated 1874. Circulated coins are easily available in any grade desired from the two high-mintage Philadelphia issues. Mint State coins are fairly scarce, as the mintage, although extensive, was much smaller than preceding and later without-arrows coins. At the gem category, such coins are rare. Choice Mint State coins are rarer than equivalent Proofs.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most are well struck, but there are exceptions. The details on Liberty’s head are sometimes weak.
Proof Coins: Probably 75% or more of the mintage of 1,500 pieces survive.
