Book References

Designer: Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Weight: 16.718 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .48375 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 27 mm. Edge: 46 raised stars. Mint: Philadelphia.

Key to Collecting: The eagle with Indian Head obverse and with reverse with periods before and after E PLURIBUS UNUM, available in wire rim (the style usually seen) and rounded (regular) rim styles, can be added to a type set if you have the inclination and finances. Or, the variety can be considered as a subtype and ignored. The choice is yours. All examples known are struck from one of two die pairs and are generally seen in Mint State. Both wire rim and regular rim varieties are nearly always seen in Mint State, as they were never circulated. Choice and gem examples are the rule, not the exception. Today, an estimated 400 or more Wire Rim coins are known, after 70 damaged coins were melted in 1914 and 1915. An estimated 20 or so Rounded Rim issues are known, as all but 50 of the examples struck were melted. No Proofs were made, although this point has been controversial in the past. As all are from the same dies and produced the same way, they are either all Mint State or all Proofs, with most specialists suggesting Mint State.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually quite good in keeping with the idiosyncrasies of the design—in which certain areas were not sharp in the dies. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous, from a multitude of tiny raised swirls or die finish lines. In the past, some have called these Proofs, but in recent times the matter seems to have been laid to rest, and all are considered to be Mint State.

Designer: Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Weight: 16.718 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .48375 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 27 mm. Edge: 46 raised stars. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver.

Key to Collecting: This is the Indian Head Saint-Gaudens eagle usually seen of the 1907 date, a type also made in early 1908. The design is as above but now without pellets or dots after E PLURIBUS UNUM, as these were removed from the new model by Henry Hering, assistant to the late Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Neither on the present variety nor the earlier described one is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, for President Theodore Roosevelt personally objected to the name of the Deity on circulating coins. Although many 1907 and 1908 eagles exist of this type, luster and eye appeal tend to vary, and some effort will be needed to find a nice one. The motif has been pleasing to collectors for a long time, and today the design is a numismatic favorite. Circulated examples are plentiful, but probably not of relevance to you as Mint State coins at the lower levels are fairly inexpensive. Mint State are also fairly plentiful, and usually quite attractive. However, quality does vary, and some modest effort will be needed to find one that is just right.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Check the central areas of Liberty’s portrait details on the obverse and, on the reverse, check the feathers of the eagle.

Proof Coins: Although a few Proofs of the 1907 date may have been made for experimental purposes, none were distributed to the numismatic community. Beware of fakes made later by sandblasting or etching Mint State coins. For all Proof gold coins of this and the next type, do not buy without consulting the advice of a trusted professional.
