Obverse Description
The obverse bears the portrait of a Native American chieftain in formal headdress struck incuse with the words LIBERTY at the top and the date at the bottom. 13 stars across the top periphery, and the date appears at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The reverse features a majestic eagle perched atop a branch, holding an olive branch in its talons. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TEN DOLLARS appear at the top periphery, right of the eagle's neck, and the bottom periphery, respectively.

Designer: Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Weight: 16.718 grams. Composition: .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight: .48375 oz. pure gold). Diameter: 27 mm. Edge: 1908–1911: 46 raised stars; 1912–1933: 48 raised stars. Mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Examples abound, but as lower-level Mint State coins are only slightly more expensive than are AU coins, Mint State seems to be a better option. At the Mint State level, the quality varies widely, and the typical piece is apt to have problems of one sort or another. Circulated coins can lack eye appeal.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking can vary. Check the details of the headdress on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. Luster ranges from somewhat “grainy” on the earlier issues to “creamy” on the 1932. Eye appeal is often independent of grade.
Proof Coins: Proofs of this era can be divided into two categories: the Sand Blast Proofs of 1908 and 1911 to 1915, in which coins from regular dies, but carefully struck on a medal press, were subjected to blasting by sand particles, giving them a rough or sandpaper-like finish; and Satin Finish Proofs, sometimes called Roman Finish Proofs, made in 1909 and 1910 with satiny bright yellow surfaces. Availability is in proportion to the mintage figures. When seen, most examples are in the choice or gem category.
