The Type 3 Indian Cents were made from bronze starting in 1864 and going through 1909. They were produced thinner than prior issues as to not confuse them with tokens from the war. This type includes a few key dates and varieties such as the 1864-L, 1877, 1909-S and more. A very desirable type from an extremely popular series.
Obverse Description
A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.
Reverse Description
The reverse bears the denomination of ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath bearing a ribbon with arrows tied in at the bottom center.

Weight: 3.11 grams. Composition: .950 copper, .050 tin and zinc.Diameter: 19 mm. Edge: Plain. Mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco.
Key to Collecting: Today, examples for type-set purposes are readily available in all grades. Despite the common nature of even gem Mint State coins, high-quality examples are in the minority. Certain dates and mintmarks are elusive. Most often encountered are dates from 1879 through 1909. Lustrous brown or red-and-brown coins offer exceptional value as most investors are urged to buy only “red” coins, accordingly raising the prices for those. However, among pieces certified as mint red, relatively few, including those in such ranges as MS-65 to MS-67, are completely without spots or flecks. Many have been recolored. Although gem cents of this type seem easy enough to find, it will pay you to seek out high quality.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Vary widely, but generally quite good. Points to look for include sharp feather, ribbon, wreath, and shield details.
Proof Coins: Plentiful as a type. Gems without flecks or spots can be hard to find, but as few buyers seem to care, you will have the advantage of being an educated buyer and will be able to find one for little added premium. Choice brown and red and brown coins offer good values in my opinion.
