Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. The designer's name, "C. GOBRECHT" appears on the rock base. 13 stars appear on the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom middle.
Reverse Description
A large eagle in flight soaring through a plain (no stars) background. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR around the periphery.

Key to Collecting: For a long time, the 1839 Gobrecht dollar of this type was considered to be a pattern and was thus in the purview of pattern specialists, although the Guide Book of United States Coins included this and some patterns among its listings. Now it is known that in 1839 the mintage of 300 coins of this type was mostly placed into circulation. Today, original examples are so rare as to be almost impossible to find in anything approaching choice preservation.
The 1839 Gobrecht dollar stands today as the rarest of all types in silver—handily eclipsing even the famous 1796 and 1797 half dollar with Draped Bust obverse, Small Eagle reverse. Most specimens that come on the market are restrikes made beginning in the spring of 1859.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally well struck. Check the details of Liberty and the higher-relief areas of the eagle.
Proof Coins: Examples are rare today. Most if not all have been classified as restrikes made in spring 1859 and later. An original, unequivocally attributed as such and properly and extensively described, would be a numismatic landmark if offered at auction!
Originals vs. Restrikes: On the original issues the reverse die is not cracked, and the eagle flies horizontally after rotation along the vertical axis. The head of Liberty is opposite the space between F in OF and first A in AMERICA on the reverse. Dollars with cracked reverse die are restrikes and are known in this alignment as well as with the head of Liberty is opposite the N in ONE on the reverse. Both originals and restrikes are also listed as patterns.
