Obverse Description
Lady Liberty is seated on a rock bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY. The designer's name, "C. GOBRECHT" appears either on the rock base, or below. The date is centered at the bottom middle.
Reverse Description
A large eagle in flight soaring through a starry field. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * ONE DOLLAR around the periphery.
Book Reference
Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 26.96 grams. Composition: .8924 silver, .1076 copper (net weight .77352 oz. pure silver). Diameter: 39–40 mm. Edge: Plain. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: As the 1836-dated Gobrecht silver dollars were placed into commerce, they quickly saw service, and today it is not particularly unusual to find examples in VF or EF grade, although they are not seen as often as Proofs or impaired Proofs. Some have had holes (for use as jewelry or on a teething cord for infants) skillfully repaired.
December 1836 saw 1,000 pieces struck; a further 600 were struck from the same dies in January 1837, but with a different die alignment. In addition, restrikes were made from the spring of 1859 onward to circa the 1870’s. Hundreds exist, and as most auction firms offer at least a few during the course of a year, there will be many purchase opportunities. This variety is also listed in the Judd book on patterns as J-60. Originals have Die Alignment I (dies 180° apart), restrikes occur in the same alignment as well as in Alignment 3 (both dies in the same direction). All originals, regardless of orientation, have a perfect (not cracked) reverse die. Restrikes are in 90% silver composition.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most examples are well struck. Although they were intended for circulation, or at least many ended up there, they seem to have been produced with great care, including a mirror Proof finish. No doubt, any one could have been placed with good effect in a numismatic cabinet, and the owner would have been delighted with all aspects of it!
Proof Coins: Quality varies from impaired Proof to gem, with some of the latter being quite beautiful. The total number extant may be on the long side of 500.
