Obverse Description
Liberty with cap, facing right, surrounded by 13, 15 or 16 stars and the word LIBERTY around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagle's right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the periphery.

Key to Collecting: Thousands of examples of the 1795 to 1807 Heraldic Eagle type exist in the marketplace, but the demand for them is such that at any given time most dealers only have a few to offer, usually of the dates in the early 19th century. Typical grades range from VF to lower Mint State levels. Higher-quality pieces are seldom seen. Truly choice and gem examples are quite difficult to find.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies widely, and it will pay to be selective when buying. Enough pieces exist that with some connoisseurship you can find a nice one. On the obverse, check the higher elements of the hair details, the star centers, and the denticles. On the reverse, which is apt to give more problems than the obverse, check the upper part of the shield, the lower part of the eagle’s neck, the eagle’s wing, the stars above the eagle, and the clouds—while you’re at it, you might as well check everything. Mint-caused planchet-adjustment marks are also frequently seen and should be avoided. Certification services take no note of adjustment marks or the quality of the striking, and, similar to the preceding type, you have a fairly clear field as many of your competitors are not aware of such differences in quality.
Notes: There is no indication of denomination or value on these coins. They were valued by gold content.
