Obverse Description
Liberty with cap, facing right, surrounded by 15 or 16 stars and the word LIBERTY around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom.
Reverse Description
A small eagle is centered holding a wreath in its beak, over its head, and an olive branch in its talons. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is written around the periphery.

Key to Collecting: All half eagles of this type, with Capped Bust to Right (conical cap) obverse, Small Eagle reverse, are quite scarce. When seen, the typical example is apt to be dated 1795 and in a grade such as VF, EF, or AU. Mint State coins are elusive.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking varies considerably from coin to coin. Planchet adjustment marks, caused by filing away metal on overweight planchets to reduce them to the appropriate standard, are a problem on this as well as other early half eagles. Such marks are usually seen in the center of the obverse and reverse as well, and/or toward the borders. With regard to striking, check the star centers, the hair details of Liberty, and the eagle feathers. The denticles also should be examined. There are enough pieces in existence that problem-free coins can be located. The challenge is great, and the accomplishment will yield much satisfaction. As is the case elsewhere in early coinage, certification services make no mention on the holders of planchet-adjustment marks, weak striking, or such other things, making the fields fairly clear for you to seek out such quality, while most of your competition is blissfully unaware of such differences!
Notes: There is no indication of denomination or value on these coins. They were valued by gold content.
