Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The centerpiece of the reverse is the so-called "heraldic eagle" with wings fully spread and emblazoned with a shield replacing the chest. A ribbon bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM hangs from the beak. The eagles right talon holds bundle of arrows and an olive branch in the right. Above the eagle's head are a group of stars and clouds with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Key to Collecting: Examples are scarce in all grades and rare in Mint State. Most examples on the market are in worn grades, often showing extensive circulation, marks, and porosity. Finding a “nice” example can be done but may involve looking over several candidates in order to select a winner. Coins in grades of EF and AU are mostly of the 1800 date. Again, 1800 comes to the fore when Mint State coins are offered as most are of this date. Examples of other dates are virtually non-existent in choice or gem Mint State and are first-class rarities even in MS-60.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most coins of this type are lightly struck in one area or another. The obverse stars usually show some weakness. On many coins, the central details of Liberty are not sharp. On the reverse, the upper right of the shield and the adjacent part of the eagle’s wing are often soft, and several or even most stars may be lightly defined (sharp stars show sharply peaked centers). Denticles are likely to be weak or missing in areas. Expect to compromise on the striking issue. Even more, many have Mintcaused planchet-adjustment marks. Finding a “nice” coin will be a challenge.
