Obverse Description
Liberty is portrayed with a so-called "draped bust," facing right, with her hair tied back with a ribbon. She is flanked by stars on the left and right periphery with the word LIBERTY on top, and the date positioned at the bottom.
Reverse Description
The small eagle design is slightly modified (improved) from the 1794-5 issues. Seen here standing atop rocks motif in the center with wings fully surrounded by a more ornate olive wreath that tied by a ribbon into a bow at the bottom. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. No denomination is mentioned.

Key to Collecting: This very scarce type in the half dime series has received a lot of attention over the years. Interestingly, most pieces on the market seem to be in grades from VG to VF, not often lower or higher, most with medium wear. Nicks and scratches can be a problem. Select an example with pleasing light or medium gray surfaces. Several different star arrangements exist for the 1797, but these are not considered to be different types. Probably no more than a few dozen truly choice Mint State coins exist. As with other early silver types, beware deeply toned or vividly iridescent toned pieces for which the true surface character cannot be determined with accuracy, but which are offered as Mint State. I recommend acquiring examples only with rich luster on the surfaces, either lightly toned or brilliant. However, any fully brilliant piece is so by virtue of having been dipped—not necessarily negative, although repeated dipping tends to make coins dull and lifeless.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Most coins are weak in one area or another, although there are some marvelous exceptions. As not many people take notice of striking sharpness, such coins can often be acquired for only a modest premium. Points to check for sharpness include the hair of Liberty, the centers of the stars, and, on the reverse, the eagle. Also check for adjustment marks, but these are infrequent. Denticles around the border are usually decent on this type, but may vary in strength from one part of the border to another. Many have Mint-caused planchet-adjustment marks. In summary, a sharply struck coin is a goal, not necessarily a reality.
