Key to Collecting: In 2004 special designs commemorating the Westward Journey (Lewis and Clark expedition) were introduced. They utilized the previous obverse design paired with two different reverse designs, one representing the Peace Medals given out by Lewis and Clark, the other showing the keelboat that provided much of their transportation. Two new reverse designs were introduced for 2005, showing the American bison and a representation of Clark’s journal entry upon spotting what he thought was the Pacific Ocean (in actuality, they were still approximately 20 miles from the coast). They were paired with a new obverse, a tightly cropped profile of Jefferson facing right. Mint State coins are very common, including gems. All basic dates and mintmarks were saved in roll quantities.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Generally well struck and attractive. Some have a matte-like finish. On the obverse, check for weakness on the portrait.

Proof Coins: Gems are common. All have mirror fields. Most have frosted or cameo contrast on the higher features.
