The Jefferson home is prominently centered with the name MONTICELLO captioned below. The denomination FIVE CENTS is spelled out in half circle underneath and the words E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appear at the top and bottom periphery. For the coins minted during WWII, the mintmark appears with a large letter above Monticello, to better designate these coins for their silver content.

Key to Collecting: To conserve nickel metal for critical wartime use, partway through 1942, the Mint revised the alloy of the five-cent piece to eliminate this element. The socalled “wartime” or “silver” composition comprised 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. To quickly differentiate pieces in this metal, the mintmark was placed as a large letter prominently over the dome of Monticello on the reverse (instead of a small letter to the right of the building, as earlier). For the first time, a P was used to designate Philadelphia issues.
Circulated coins are common but not usually considered for inclusion in a type set as Mint State coins are readily available. Circulated pieces are often dull and/or blotchy whereas there are beautiful gems available.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: The silver content was sufficient to give the finished pieces a bright, deeply lustrous finish not much different from that found on contemporary dimes, quarters, and half dollars. The metal was softer than the normal nickel-content alloy, resulting in many pieces being struck with very sharp design details including the steps on the Monticello building. Mint State coins are usually well struck and often of exceptional beauty.
Proof Coins: Proof strikings were made only in 1942. Until recent decades, it was not unusual for dealers to obtain quantity groups of the 1942-P. However, by now most have been dispersed. Attractive Proofs are readily available singly.
