The 1992 Close AM Lincoln cent is an extremely rare transitional error that may have been created in the process of testing new reverse dies for the production of 1993 Lincoln cents, which show the bottoms of the letters A and M of the word AMERICA very close together, virtually touching each other. The very close proximity of the A and M is a very easy diagnostic for attributing the 1992 Close AM Lincoln cent and distinguishing it from the regular 1992 Lincoln cents, which show a perceptible gap between the bottoms of the A and M.

This variety was discovered in 2006, a few years after a similar transitional error was first found for the 1992-D cent. However, the 1992-D Close AM Lincoln cents are relatively more common than the 1992 Close AM cent. While more than a dozen 1992-D Close AM Lincoln cents are known, there are perhaps only a few 1992 Close AM Lincoln cents in existence.
