Key to Collecting: In 1959 the reverse of the cent was redesigned to feature a plan view of the Lincoln Memorial building. The design seems to fit uncomfortably, rendering an effect that at least to the casual observer seems to be bottom-heavy, rather than balanced. However, for 50 years it was the standard. Not much needs to be said about this type.

Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Striking sharpness varies. You will need to look through quite a few pieces to find one that has excellent strike on both sides. On the obverse, look for sharp hair details in the portrait and an absence of tiny marks on the shoulder. On the reverse, look for full details of the building steps and the tiny Lincoln statue. Such sharp pieces, though in the minority, are still plentiful.
