Key to Collecting: Much attention was paid in the early 1970’s to the forthcoming 200th anniversary of American independence. For the occasion special reverse designs were made for the quarter dollar, half dollar, and dollar, and on the obverse of each the curious double date, 1776-1976, was placed. In view of anticipated demand, many coins were prestruck in calendar year 1975. Many numismatists consider the reverse motif of the quarter dollar to be the most attractive used on the three denominations made for this event. Circulated coins abound but are not relevant for type-set purposes as Mint State pieces are common and are available in all grades.

Proof Coins: Proofs were made in large quantities and were plentiful on the market for years afterward, with retail shops at the different mints having examples on display and for sale for several years after the bicentennial ended. One reason for this is that the coin market was in the doldrums in 1976, a down point in the market cycle, and large quantities that might otherwise have been absorbed weren’t. This translates into good news for you today, as gem coins can be had for a pittance.
