A low mintage in the Liberty Nickel series since it is well under two thousand, with 1,733 coins struck in 1911. Even with such a low mintage this coin is quite affordable as most were saved. Pieces without a cameo are very common. The Cameo designation brings a premium in all grades, especially the finest of gems that are quite scarce. The issue does not exist with a deep cameo.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: This issue has the highest circulation-strike mintage of any Liberty Head nickel. Sharpness, luster, and other aspects of desirability vary, but there are many coins to choose from in the marketplace. Proofs are somewhat scarce and are usually very attractive.

Characteristics and Appearance: Striking and luster vary, due to worn dies, spacing in the press, and other considerations.
Mintage and Distribution Notes: Mehl’s Numismatic Monthly, March 1911, included this: “The Mint at Philadelphia is working twenty-four hours a day to turn out token money, pennies and nickels, and can not keep pace with the demand for them.”
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Usually well struck with Full Details. Cameo por- trait contrast on some, at long last (see remarks under 1902). The nickel alloy was not well mixed, causing streaking in the rolled-out strips from which planchets were cut. Toned nickels of this date often have streaks as a result. The fields are quite flat (not basined).
