The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The lowest mintage thus far and the first to be under the two thousand mark, at 1,862 struck. Coins without any cameo are very easy to come by with a gradual increase in value with cameo pieces. Deep Cameos are rare but not too difficult to locate.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.
Book Reference
Key to Collecting: The mintage of nickels was relatively small in 1896, creating a key date. The nation had not yet calmed down from the Panic of 1893, and fewer coins were saved as souvenirs than might have been the case otherwise. For the first time in the Liberty Head series, the Proof mintage figure slipped below the 2,000 mark.
Today, sharply struck Mint State coins in higher grades are very elusive—making this one of the top keys in the series. Proofs are scarce, but when found they are apt to be choice.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Most are lightly struck in one area or another, and luster can be a problem as well. A total of 56 obverse dies were made. 3026 (Deep Cameo)—1,2501,7503,1007,50013,000
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Quality varies. At least one obverse die was heavily repolished; Proofs struck from this die have some stars with flat centers and show prominent lint marks from debris.
