The unprecedented crossover underscores his personal efforts to combat “grade inflation.”
The 1895 V Nickel comes from a low mintage for the series of 2,062. Common without cameo designations except for the finest of gems which, in the nicest of grades, are extremely rare and valuable. Cameo coins are a good bit scarcer with deep cameos non-existent.
Obverse Description
Lady Liberty with the word LIBERTY on her crown faces left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom center.
Reverse Description
Large V (roman numeral 5) is centered in the design surrounded by an ornate wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * CENTS * around the periphery. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears near the top between the wreath and letters STATES OF AME.

Key to Collecting: Once again, problem-free choice and gem nickels are a challenge, and relatively few of the 1895 date pass the test. Fortunately, enough are around that you will have no problem finding one; however, you may have to inspect a half dozen or more before locating an example that is just right. Proofs are usually quite nice, with deeply mirrored fields.
A word of caution is in order concerning the population reports of grading services. For this and many other years of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, values are modest for circulation strikes and Proofs below the 63 or 64 designation. Because of this, relatively few have been submitted, giving them the undeserved appearance of scarcity and rarity when such reports are studied. Actually, most nickels of this era are very common in grades from MS-60 through 63.
CIRCULATION STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Sharpness can be a problem, as can luster and eye appeal. There were 47 obverse dies made. 3023 (Deep Cameo)———5,0009,50017,000
PROOF STRIKES:
Characteristics and Appearance: Proofs are on the scarce side, but when found are apt to have fewer problems than for the several immediately preceding dates.
