The 1862 is one of the more common Copper-Nickel Indian Cents making it an ideal type coins for the series. Only scarce in high-end gem as anything less is very much affordable and accessible. It normally comes with a strong strike and most notably the date displays quality, flashy luster.
Obverse Description
A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.
Reverse Description
The reverse bears the denomination of ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath bearing a ribbon with arrows tied in at the bottom center.

1862 Cent Production: With the hope of a quick end to the war diminishing, silver and gold coinage quickly vanished from general circulation. The only coin that circulated was the copper-nickel cent. Seeing demand for the cent increase, the Mint shifted most of its production from silver and gold coins to the cent. Speculators who sold them at a slight profit to merchants mostly bought up this large production.
Survivability: Most of this issue circulated briefly and then were removed from general circulation during the Civil War coinage crisis peaking in summer 1862. At the end of the war, these came out again and circulated until the redemption of the 1870’s. Most examples are in higher than average condition.
Collecting Challenges: These are very popular as the predominant coin in use during the Civil War. Examples are plentiful, so collectors are advised to find problemfree pieces in as high a grade as their collecting parameters allow.
Collecting Circulated Pieces: The optimal collecting grade for circulated coins is AU-50. Examples in all other grades are easily obtainable.
Collecting Mint State Pieces: The optimal collecting grade for Mint State coins is MS-65. These are widely available in all grades up to MS-65. They are diffcult to find with early die states and full strikes. Full-strike pieces should have full feather tips as well as full diamonds on the lower ribbon.
Collecting Proof Issues: This is the most common date to find in the copper-nickel Proof series. One reason for this higher quality may be that all unsold examples were saved and resold to collectors at some later time, possibly after the war. Examples are of very high quality and collectors are advised to buy PF-64 and higher grades. Cameo examples exist, but not in great quantities.
