The Pointed Bust design covers just a fraction of the 1860 mintage and is more similar to the 1859 (as the tip of the bust is not rounded like the rest of 1860 mintage). Certainly scarcer than the rounded busts with all grades being a bit more valuable, especially high-end gems that are very rare.

Obverse Description

A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.

Reverse Description

The reverse bears the denomination of ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath bearing a ribbon with arrows tied in at the bottom center.

Book Reference

1860, Pointed Bust, Cent Production: The Pointed Bust portrait is the design used for all Indian Head cents dated 1859. Pointed Bust refers to the pointed left tip of the neckline, as opposed to the later Rounded Bust design. This bust was used on some 1860-dated cents, which could also be correctly called 1860, Type of 1859. These were produced when as many as ten undated Pointed Bust obverse dies made in 1859 were dated with the 1860 date punch and put into production. They are possibly the first Indian Head cent issues with the new reverse. The long-overlooked design difference is as significant as the 1864 With L and 1864 No L design change.

The difference in the shape of the bust truncation may have been noted first in 1971 by Don Taxay, in Rounded Bust Scott’s Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins. In 1988 Walter Breen called it to collectors’ attention in his popular Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins. Since then, there has been a steady increase in the number of pieces known as more and more collectors find them in dealers’ inventories, priced as regular Rounded Bust examples. Today they are priced similarly to the 1859 Indian Head cent in most grades.

Perhaps because of its relatively recent popularization, the standard coin-collecting albums do not typically have openings for this design. If this changes, and if collector interest increases, demand should rise to absorb all examples found, with premiums rising if more fail to show up.

Survivability: These were not recognized as a separate design until the late 1980’s, so surviving examples were not saved for this reason. Most might have been saved because they were the first coins of the new reverse design. Today most examples are well worn.

Collecting Challenges: This issue is usually well struck and when high-grade examples are found they can be very pretty. Collectors used to be able to find these unattributed, but that is getting more and more diffcult.

Collecting Circulated Pieces: The optimal collecting grade for circulated coins is EF-40. These are sometimes diffcult to locate. Prices should presently be only a moderate premium over the Rounded Bust design, about what 1859 Indian Head cents sell for. As demand increases, this may change. To reap a small reward, even if you do not need this date, be on the lookout for it being offered as the typically found Rounded Bust cent.

Collecting Mint State Pieces: The optimal collecting grade for Mint State coins is MS-63. These are presently quite scarce in Mint State grades, with premiums rising from three to six times the price of a Rounded Bust example. These are usually quite attractive.
