The Type 1 Indian Cent lasts for just one year (1859) which is very common for the series. Just the reverse is different for this type as the obverse remains the same throughout the series.
Obverse Description
A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.
Reverse Description
The reverse features the denomination ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath with a ribbon at the very bottom center.

Designer: James B. Longacre. Weight: 4.67 grams. Composition: .880 copper, .120 nickel. Diameter: 19 mm. Edge: Plain. Mint: Philadelphia.
Key to Collecting: The 1859 Indian Head cent is the only year with the laurel wreath reverse. Circulated coins are plentiful in all grades. Mint State coins exist across a wide range of numerical designations. Surface quality varies but is usually good. Finding one with excellent aesthetic appeal will be no problem.
Aspects of Striking and Appearance: Usually well struck. Look for details at the feather tips, on the diamonds on the ribbon of the portrait, and on the leaves on the reverse.
Proof Coins: Fairly scarce, but enough remain from the estimated mintage of 800 coins that they appear on the market with regularity. Quality is an entirely different matter, and coins with deep mirror fields and excellent eye appeal are rare. Fortunately for you, most buyers simply read the labels on holders and do not care about aesthetic appeal—this being a story that is repeated for most types of United States coins. Accordingly, when you find a special piece, the premium for it will not be great.
