About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the $1 Modern Commems (Proof) series of Commemoratives in the U.S. Coins contains 2 distinct entries with CPG® values between $43.00 and $145.00.
Proof modern commemorative silver dollars are popular collectibles, collectively representing the highest-mintage coins of all modern commemoratives. Dozens of different proof commemorative silver dollars have been made representing a broad variety of subjects ranging from sports and museum to war heroes and national parks.

While proof commemorative silver dollars are often big sellers when first issued by the United States Mint, they have a very spotty, if not poor track record in terms of holding their value in the secondary marketplace. This is due to generally high mintages relative to deflated interest in a particular issue during the months and years after their original release.

Over the long term, the best performers have been the various 1996 proof Olympic silver dollars, 1997-S Jackie Robinson proof silver dollar, 1998-S Robert F. Kennedy proof silver dollar, 1998-S Black Revolutionary Patriots silver dollar, and 2001-P American Buffalo silver dollar. Certified PR70 specimens are perennially popular with collectors, as are crisp, spotless specimens in original government packaging.
